JPJ Conducted Road Safety Advocacy Talks at SIDMA College Sabah

SIDMA College Sabah collaborated with Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JPJ) Sabah and conducted a Road Safety Advocacy talk at SIDMA College Sabah Atrium on 12 June 2018. The event which was coordinated by Mohd Fikri, President of SIDMA’s Student Representative Council (MPM) and his team of  MPM members, was aimed to instil road safety awareness among the students of the college, particularly to the Semester June 2018 newly registered students. It was also held in conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya Festival which falls on 15 June 2018, as students will travel to their respective hometowns to celebrate the occasion with their family and friends.

Miss Nur Hajma from JPJ during her talk emphasised that during festivities, such as the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration, there will be more vehicles on the roads, and the likelihood of accidents to occur is also very great. Thus she reminded students, and the general public to travel safely in order to reach their destinations safely; as festival are when families look forward to being with their loved ones and together, celebrate the happy occasion.

With the aid of video clips, she managed to explain clearly the rules and regulations often ignored or forgotten by road users and advised students to reflect on it before heading on the road. They need to ensure that the vehicle that they are driving are in good condition prior to using it.

Meanwhile, Mr Adam Chan, from “Now! Project”, a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiative to inculcate public awareness and sustainability on value chain for plastic waste to reduce, recycle and reuse plastic and end dumping of solid waste on open seas and ocean, also took the opportunity to share with students; and encouraged them to practice and spread the awareness on the importance of a clean and healthy environment; as well as how to achieve it. It is especially vital since the marine tourism and generally tourism in Sabah will be affected based on how we managed the waste.

The purpose of the talk was to encourage students to be able to understand their role that they can assist to turn waste into something with value and help to maintain a sustainable reduction, collection and re-use of plastic waste. They too, can assist by encouraging the general and their communities’ to participate in the campaign and assist to spread the ideas to their local communities.

Mr. Terence Stephens, Manager of Student Affairs Department (STAD), on behalf of SIDMA College Sabah, thanked both the speakers for their valuable sharing to students. He too hoped that the students managed to grasp the core of the talk and to reflect as well as  apply their learnings during their daily encounters. He also encouraged students, as young leaders of the country to share such knowledge and learning to their new friends and collectively implement these noble practices.
